Grade 6 ELECTIVE COURSES 2017.2018

 

  • Participation in electives may be subject to demonstrating proficiency in 5th grade coursework and other indicators in ELA/Math
  • All courses are year-long, unless otherwise noted.

 

 

Agriculture Science Exploratory 

This course is designed as an introduction course into Basic Agricultural science and landscaping. The course introduces the major areas of scientific agricultural production and research; presents problem solving lessons and introductory skills and knowledge in agricultural science and agri-related technologies. Classroom and landscaping activities are supplemented through supervised agricultural experiences and activities.

 

CADETS (PE Option)

The MISSION of the California Cadet Corps (CACC) is to provide California schools and students with a quality educational and leadership development program that prepares students for success in college and the work force. The mission is accomplished through the six core OBJECTIVES of the California Cadet Corps: to develop Leadership, to engender Citizenship, to encourage Patriotism, to foster Academic Excellence, to teach Basic Military Knowledge, to promote Health, Fitness, and Wellness.

 

Choir 

Students will learn to sing and recognize many styles of music, some from other parts of the world, as well as gain confidence and self-assurance during the stages of change in the developing male voice. While there is no previous singing experience necessary, students should like to sing and desire to improve as a singer. This choir performs a minimum of three times per year outside of class time. This course offers the opportunity to prepare for more advanced choirs and meets state standards for the Arts in Music.

 

Computer Science - Project Lead the Way (PLTW)

PLTW provides engineering, biomedical, and computer science curriculum for middle school students that challenges, inspires student with rigorous and relevant experiences through activity, project, and problem based learning. They use industry leading technology to solve problems while gaining skills in communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity

 

Guitar

This course covers the basics of the instrument and an application of essential music fundamentals. Students will learn the basic of playing guitar at a beginning level through studying music notation, chord symbols, and peer modeling.  A brief history of the guitar along with a study of its respective musical styles will also be covered in this course. The main objective of this course is to create an enhanced appreciation for music through playing the guitar.  Students will learn how to read music notation, chord symbols, and tablature. Students will also gain a better understanding of many different musical genres including classical, flamenco, blues, jazz, rock, and pop music. 

 

Pioneer Prep Band

The Pioneer Prep Band is for those students that wish to start playing an instrument. This group is intended as a 1 year class.  All students are encouraged to audition to be in the Pioneer Mustang Marching Band after completion of Prep Band. This class is intended for 6th and 7th graders. Anyone wishing to start a new instrument or continue playing their instrument is encouraged to select this course. This group is for beginners to intermediate players. This instrumental music course meets state standards for the Arts in Music.

 

Pioneer Auxiliary (Must Audition)

The Pioneer Auxiliary is the group of amazing and talented students that lead the Pioneer Marching Band down the street.  We have front banners that spell out PIONEER, as well as majorettes, flag, and back banner that spells MUSTANGS.  You will need to audition for this group and be able to meet during 7th period P.E. as well as after school.  Tryouts will be in May.  You can pick up an application in the office.

 

Prep Orchestra / Mariachi

The Pioneer Prep Orchestra / Mariachi course is for those students that wish to start playing an instrument. This group is intended as a 1 year class.  All students are encouraged to continue onto Pioneer Advanced Orchestra / Mariachi course. Anyone wishing to start a new instrument or continue playing their instrument is encouraged to select this course. This group is for beginners to intermediate players. This instrumental music course meets state standards for the Arts in Music.

 

Project Based Learning (PBL)

Project Based Learning electives provide student-directed hands-on learning opportunities in which students work collaboratively to identify problems, conduct research, evaluate information, and develop solutions. With teacher guidance, PBL students create their own learning experiences aligned with State and Common Core Standards. PBL projects are complex tasks that engage both critical and creative thinking concepts and strategies to fully explore realistic products or presentations and to seek solutions to real world problems. Some examples include basic life skills such as cooking, art, sewing and design.
